How to create a profitable personal brand on social media

PERSONAL BRANDING CONTENT STRATEGY

In episode 3 'Personal Branding Content Strategy', I was joined by beautiful cocktail correspondent, Natalie Hailey, from Hot Content. If you missed this episode, please make sure you go back and watch it here first.

Natalie mentioned how she is also a big fan of the Andrew and Pete 90:10 rule, so I thought it was worth just doing a quick recap before we get into building a profitable personal brand.

Now the more widespread, well-known terminology is centred around a slightly different ratio, and that's a ratio of 80 to 20. The idea of being that if you share and curate other people's content with 80% of your efforts and time, and spend just 20% of your time creating your own content, then you put yourself in a much better position for growth, click throughs, followers, because you're a busy business owner who isn't a full time content creator, this is a more efficient use of your time.

A few years back, Andrew and Pete came up with the more concentrated approach and that was centred around the ratio of 90:10. They strongly recommend that it makes more sense as a content creating business owner to give something 90% of your effort.

They often recommend picking just one social media platform, giving that as much attention and focus as possible, and using content repurposing for just 10% of that ratio, this way, they suggest that you're gonna build your following, and ultimately your influence, as well as increase your turnover much quicker.

Natalie mentioned this is something she has taken on board for her business, and this is absolutely something that I use myself in my own personal brand.

Let's take a quick look and I wanna show you exactly how this works in my business.

PROFITABLE PERSONAL BRAND

It's true, I really do love social media. I'm present on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Maintaining all of these platforms was a tonne of work, and I just couldn't justify getting serious about my YouTube channel because I didn't have the time.

I've juggled things around like this by deprioritizing all platforms. I wanted to give 90% of my focus to Instagram. You'll see here that I'm arguing that YouTube is not technically a social media platform. Instead for me, it sits way above this, and that's where I put my primary content out first. This just means that I've created content in my own right.

I talk about this on this episode as well in a little bit more detail. I've moved all of my social chatting time to Instagram. I now have 30 minutes in the morning to respond to notifications and DMs, and then I allocate another 30 minutes at the end of the day to do my outreach specifically just on Instagram. All of my other social medias get cleared on a Friday afternoon if I have the time, and if not, I have a VA who does that for me, and she will point me to things that are needing my attention.

INSTAGRAM

As Instagram is my most important social media platform, I give this most of my time and creative attention. And as I mentioned on 'What is a personal brand and why is it important for a business owner?', I make sure that I'm constantly circulating the storylines of the five themes I have in my personal brand. So sales campaigns, calls to action, they all come as a secondary part of any content that I create, and I wanna make sure that you understand my personality before you wanna do business with me. That's a key part of why I have adopted a personal brand approach, I want us to make sure that we get on first, before we start talking about a transactional business conversation. It's important to me, and I think it's important to you when you're making a buying decision. You wanna understand what my overall quest is, and I think it's good these days to be able to get a sense of how that business owner is documenting their journey as an entrepreneur.

It's something that we're getting more passionate about, we wanna know the people behind the business before we're willing to part with our money. So this is why I have things that way around in the way that I create all of my content.

PROFITABILITY

It's true, in the last year, I have increased my following significantly on Instagram, but the more important data that you can't see is that my engagement is up by 56% on last year, and I've increased my reach by 70%.

Now, with these wonderful stats and great news has come a lot more profitability for me in my business. The first thing that we need to know is that I have way more time to actually do business. By creating this time, I've been able to create a
new division in my business, and that is centred around retainer clients, who I wanna work with long term, we're working to build their brand and their influence, but that now fits around my photography work.

And that has increased my overall business profitability by 120%. And what's more, the majority of these retainer clients
decided to work with me because they love the creative approach I have to my own content creation on Instagram.

There is a knock-on effect as well, so having more time away from social media has given me the time that I needed to invest in making Mwah TV brilliant, and that has dramatically increased my web traffic. Stats show that when people land on my website, they are so much more likely to stick around, and we can see by following all those confusing little paths on Google Analytics, that the reason they stick around is because they wanna watch embedded episodes of Mwah TV, and they've usually been referred by Instagram.

And because I'm more focused and present in real time on Instagram, I'm now starting to get contacted more frequently about being involved in micro-influencer campaigns. That's where other people re using my following to get their business message out.

So far this year, I have accumulated £150 worth of free swag as a result of promoting products that I genuinely care about, and ones that sit with my ethical approach to doing business.
