MEET MY CLIENT TIANA WILSON-BUYS!
I’ve worked with Tiana for some time now as a business coach. I was shocked to find out that she had completed writing her first book behind the scenes, a true testament to managing time masterfully. She approached me to help her get and author photo set of headshots to appease her editor who asked for one to use as an inlay on her front cover. She had to have a professional photographer, who was ready to work exactly to her brief, and schedule.
Tiana had been using a photograph she had her wife take for her to use for any business headshot need. She really hates having her photograph taken, and was very keen we keep any fuss around the photo shoot down to the absolute minimum.
THE TURBO PLANNING
In line with time management precision, we discussed the deliverables of the Turbo shoot. This was planned into both of our schedules, and Tiana was keen on the fact that she wouldn’t need to allocate any time to post-shoot decision making.
PLANNING TIANA’S AUTHOR PHOTO SESSION
From the brief chat on planning that I did with Tiana, a quick and time conscious wish-list developed that included some key factors. I knew that it was crucial to involve and include the following factors in the shoot:
- Keep it all very short and snappy
- Use Professional Photographer tricks to take her mind off being photographed on the day
- Shoot with Black and White in mind, this was an editor requirement

With the wish-list in mind, shooting to my simple brief was really straight forward in execution. I met Tiana at her offices and we headed to some different spots in and around her building to capture her in different styles of lighting that I knew would work well de-saturated as black and white.

Tiana told me that she was feeling uneasy about the shoot, so we started off with some really simple shots, to begin with, and help her get relaxed.
To switch the whole look of the author photo session up, I asked Tiana to take her blazer off. This made a new set of images instantly high-key. I distracted Tiana’s attention from being photographed by asking her to help me out with my reflector (classic trick of the professional photographer trade). Whilst she focused on this, I was able to get some really natural expression shots without her thinking about it.

I asked Tiana to simply wear what she normally would to work. She has a relaxed formal style in her workwear and opted for a monochrome outfit. This obviously works perfectly in the black and white photography conversion.
