What is Personal Branding?

No matter what your status or job title, it can be argued you have a personal brand. The real question, is how intentional do you want to be in how you build it?

Here are some examples:

  • The seasoned employee who is ready to claim the recognition they finally deserve.
  • The entrepreneur who wants to maintain a sense of flexibility as they begin building their empire.
  • An expert who wants to soar to celebrity level to monetise their expertise as well as fight for positive change within their expertise.
  • The content creator who is aiming at being seen (and paid) as an influencer.

These are not all the examples. In today’s world, personal branding as a construct is so prevalent because we all consume so much content, still worship the well-known/celebrity and I’m willing to bet good money that you have been influenced by a person or number of people who have put their head above the parapet, developed their own personal brand and have achieved a level of success you admire and want to aim for yourself.

When is the right time for Personal Branding Photography?

Brand Photography is best carried out once you have your brand strategy in place.

If you are not confident that your brand is fully figured out, I can still help you. I recommend you do the branding work on your business first and plug any immediate photographic gaps with more of a professional headshot set of assets.

Once you have a good handle on the way you want your brand to serve you it’s time to articulate that with a myriad of branding touchpoints. Here’s a helpful diagram to show you what I mean by this.

How my Personal Branding Photography Service Works

Preparation

Preparation will include:

  • An initial 30min brand consultancy call
  • Documented recommendations on how to direct the shoot to achieve your wider business goals and personal brand building plan.
  • A follow-up 30min shoot planning call
  • Support and guidance in scouting appropriate locations.
  • Optional extra introductions and guidance to additional suppliers (make-up, hair, styling, special FX).

Execution

Execution will include:

  • Half day shoot time.
  • Using 2-3 different locations as planned.
  • Outfit changes (up to 8).
  • Coaching and guidance on posing to create a wide range of appropriate results.
  • Directing any suppliers on your behalf.
  • Social media coverage of you and your call to action from the crew on shoot day.

Completion

Completion will include:

  • Presenting a gallery of images from our Brand Photography Shoot Day.
  • Working together to narrow this collection down to your best 50 images.
  • Retouching the final collection.
  • Optimising the final collection for SEO performance that supports your Personal Brand building plans.
  • Delivering the final collection to your preferred cloud storage.
  • Commercial Licencing so you don’t need to worry about copyright.
  • Sharing the behind-the-scenes side of this to promote your business with follow up content (video on MwahTV and a supporting blog).

What’s the difference between Branding Photography and Personal Branding Photography?

Brand photography MUST articulate the core of your brand. If it doesn’t, then the photography cannot be brand photography. To achieve this essential articulation, careful consideration of:

  • Your Brand Values (sometimes called core values): Shown on more of a human emotion level through the photography created ensuring your role in this set up conveys your personal magic/skills and expertise as well as style and approach.
  • Who your customers are and how they see the world: And how you sit in their world through photography that explains this to make it easy for potential customers to imagine themselves in that set of photographs with you.
  • The level of service and customer experience you’re looking to become recognised for: Social Proofing your impact through powerful choreographed visuals.
  • Before and after state (how someone feels before experiencing what you have to sell and how this changes/evolves afterwards): Heavy emphasis on the after state, alongside an introduction to your world and perspective on life. This is often portrayed with imagery that conveys what matters most to you.

Just like with brand photography, the creative direction part of these integral message points and ideas needs to be realised with branding strategy. This is basically where the theory side of branding meets the creative side of branding. Formalising answers to questions like:

  • What eras or aesthetics does my brand emulate or take inspiration from? You might love the overall vibe of the 80’s, but what flavour of this decade is visually you? Are you rocking the trashy Madonna hair scarf and black plastic bracelets or are you giving more of a power suit look.
  • What is the sound of my brand? (AKA Sonic Branding) You’re upbeat. But is this upbeat like Catriona and the Waves, or upbeat like Lizzo?
  • What feelings and emotions do we want to marry up to this brand? And then specifically, how does your emotional take on the world affect how you deliver what you sell?
  • How does colour play a role to secure the psychology of my brand? Then how can we bake this emotion into your photography beyond just having you hold a mug that is that colour?
